The California Wildfires

The California Wildfires

Over the past few months, the state of California has been affected by numerous wildfires, with some being the largest in California’s state history. The fires were fast moving and destroyed everything in sight. Over 600,000 acres of land have been burned and more than 13,000 firefighters have aided those affected by the fires. More than 40 people have been killed and thousands have lost their homes. There are many efforts still being made to manage the air quality and create shelters for those who lost their entire lives to the fires. The fires were caused by extreme heat and drought. Temperatures were above 70 degrees and near average precipitation. Most importantly, climate change was a major factor in the wildfires. “A warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, so there’s the potential for greater rainfall events, worse flooding,” said Michael Mann, a director of the Earth Science System Center at Pennsylvania State University, “A warmer atmosphere also dries out the soils, causing drought… You’re moving the probability curve, and at the tail of the curve are the extreme weather events.” California has been greatly affected by these fires and hopefully, there will be resolutions for such events occurring in the future.
