Theodor Seuss Geisel, most popularly known as Dr. Seuss, was an American children’s author, cartoonist, and animator. Under his pen name, “Dr. Seuss”, he has written more than 60 books! He was born on March 2, 1904. On this day, to celebrate his memory, the National Education Association created a program called “Read Across America”. This event is held either on March 2 or on the school day closest to it. Its purpose is to motivate children to read because of how important it is in their student achievement and lifelong success. Some schools take the whole day to read Dr. Seuss books together as a class or with a partner during school hours, while other schools may just take a few minutes

to explain what it is and give the children the opportunity to participate at home. Overall, Read Across America is a great program to get children more involved in reading as well as a great way to honor Dr. Seuss himself.
